The banknote processing apparatus is provided with: a capture means 101 capturing banknotes; an identification means 105 identifying the old and new banknotes, a counterfeit, denomination, and the like captured by the capture means; a plurality of accumulation sections 111-115 one more in number than the kinds of banknotes accumulating the kinds of binding-target banknotes with a specified volume based on an identification result obtained by the identification means; a binding means 200 binding the banknotes with the specified volume accumulated on the accumulation sections; a specification means 11 specifying a classification method for the kinds of binding-target banknotes and the binding-free banknotes; and a control section 400 applying distribution control to the banknotes identified by the identification means and distributing the banknotes to the plurality of accumulation sections based on the specification done by the specification means, switching the capture from the capture means to intermittent capture and verifying the denomination or the like one by one by means of the identification means when one of the plurality of accumulation sections becomes full and the other accumulation sections are almost full during accumulating the banknotes having the same denomination as that of the banknotes accumulated on the full-space accumulation section on a spare accumulation section, and controlling the capture to continue the intermittent capture until a new spare accumulation section is available.
