To obtain the bar gate device which can handle the passage of users efficiently by urging a passenger to pass by forcibly driving a gate bar in the opening direction when the passenger stays in a gate passage and does not push the gate bar.
If a user 9 does not pass in spite of a unlock state (passage of the user is allowed), a sensor 7 detects the person being present in the gate passage 1 and starts a timer for a gate bar driving mechanism 10 and a voice device 11. Then if the user 9 still stays in the gate passage when a specific timer time (e.g. about 5 seconds) is elapsed, the gate bar driving mechanism 10 is started to drive and rotate the gate bar 4 slowly in the forward direction. Consequently, a next gate bar 4 which rotates projecting into the gate passage from its standby position comes into contact the user 9 almost at his or her hips and pushes the user forward, so that the user 9 is urged to pass.
