To provide a base coating composition which has a high non-volatile content when adjusted to a viscosity suitable for coating, preferably contains only a small amount of a regulated volatile organic compound, and is suitable for forming a coating film excellent in physical properties such as finishability and hardness, and to provide a coating composition containing the same.

The base coating composition comprises an acrylic polyol (A), a polyester polyol (B) having a weight average molecular weight of 2,000-50,000, a hydroxyl value of 0.5-200 mgKOH/g, and a glass transition temperature of -70 to 0C, and an organic solvent (C). The acrylic polyol (A) comprises styrene (a), a bridged alicyclic hydrocarbon group-containing polymerizable unsaturated monomer (b), and a hydroxyl group-containing polymerizable unsaturated monomer (c) as constituent monomer components, wherein the sum of (a) and (b) is 30 mass% or more of the constituent monomer components. The amount of (B) in the composition is 1-70 mass% based on the sum of (A) and (B).
