Abstract:

To provide a base oil for a lubricant and the lubricant capable of exhibiting excellent properties within a wide temperature range, stably assuming sufficient lubricity even when used over a long period of time even under high-temperature load environments and having good heat resistance.

The base oil for the lubricant and the lubricant are as follows: the base oil for the lubricant comprises a synthetic ester obtained by reacting pentaerythritol with a carboxylic acid. Furthermore, the carboxylic acid contains 95-100 wt.% of the total content of 2-ethylhexanoic acid, n-heptanoic acid and n-octanoic acid. The content of the 2-ethylhexanoic acid in the carboxylic acid is 15-35 wt.%. The total content of the n-heptanoic acid and the n-octanoic acid is 65-85 wt.%.
