PURPOSE: To prepare high quality information recording paper by imparting a barrier property and efficiently forming a uniform coating layer, by forming a gaseous phase reactive hydrophobic substance on the surface of a paper base material.
CONSTITUTION: Gas such as gasified alkylchlorosilane is introduced into a constant volume chamber 1 held at atmospheric pressure or lower from a gas introducing port 2 as to reach predetermined concn. A sheet-like paper base material 3is continuously introduced into the chamber 1 from an introducing slit 4 to be contacted with gas, and a hydrophobic group such as an alkyl silanol group is formed on the surface of the base material 3 while the base material passes through a discharge slit 4 to be taken up in the outside. The reaction byproduct (hydrogen chloride gas the in the case alkylchlorosilane) of the paper base material 3 and the gas is discharged from a discharge port 6 but said byproduct remaining in the paper base material is removed by heating the base material 3 immediately bofore taking-up. The concn. of the gas in the chamber 1 is kept constant by regulating the amount of the introduced gas and discharge amount corresponding to the feed speed of the paper base material 3.
