PURPOSE: To produce a copolymer of high mechanical strength by copolymerizing glycidyl (metha)acrylate or (metha)allyl glycidyl ether and vinyl (metha)acrylate or divinyl spirobi-m-dioxane.
CONSTITUTION: A bead copolymer is produced by copolymerizing glycidyl (metha)acrylate or (metha)allyl glycidyl ether (A) with 5 to 50wt.% of vinyl (metha)acrylate or divinylspirobi-m-dioxane (B) and another type of monomer, as required, in the presence of 0.2 to 2.0wt.% of an oil-soluble free-radical polymerization initiator in an aqueous solvent kept at a pH level of 2 to 9, under the conditions of agitation speed: 50 to 500rpm, temperature: 80°C or lower and reaction time: 0.5 to 5hr, the product copolymer having structures cross- linked by the component (B), the epoxy group derived from the component (A) being modified to have the ring cleaved, particle size of 10μm or more and gel water content of 30 to 2000%.
