To improve reliability by accurately and easily measuring negative bearing axial clearance of a bearing device for a drive axle.
An outer joint member 5 of a constant velocity universal joint 4 is press fit to an axle 2 of an internal member, a caulking portion 5f formed on a tip of an outer joint member 5 has hardness of Hv200-300, and the caulking portion 5f is caulked to an axle side to be assembled. A dimension of the bearing clearance of an axle bearing portion having an outer ring 11 of an external member, a rolling element and the axle 2 is controlled on the basis of measured values as the negative clearance. A quenched hardened layer is formed over the whole length of an inner peripheral face of the cylindrical axle 2.
