To provide a bearing for use in a water pump or similar apparatus and a method of assembling the bearing.
The bearing has a stepped shaft 46 and a raceway 45 counterbored 64 at the fan or pulley end 60 which allows for use of a larger number of balls 52 at the fan or pulley end 60, and which allows for using larger balls 54 at the impeller end 62. A plurality of balls 52, 54 and cages 56, 58 are assembled first, and the assembly is mounted into an outer race at its pulley end 60. The shaft 46 is then slid, with the impeller end 62 first, into the outer race 44 through the pulley end 60 of the outer race 44 such that a first inner raceway 48 and the first plurality of balls 52 align with the first outer raceway 45. The shaft 46 is then displaced in a direction perpendicular to its axial centerline within the outer race. A second plurality of balls 54 are inserted onto the shaft 46 within the outer race at the end of its second outer raceway 47, and a second cage 58 is inserted over the shaft 46 and within the outer race to surround the second plurality of balls 54.
