PURPOSE: To obtain a new benzilic acid derivative useful as an excellent agent for urinary organs, especially as an improver for urinary function, particularly as a therapeutic agent for pollakisurea.
CONSTITUTION: This benzilic acid derivative is a compound of formula I [R is OH which may be substituted with OH; X is O, an alkylene or an N-R1 (R1 is H or a linear aliphatic hydrocarbon residue)] or its acid addition salt such as 2,2-dimethyl-3-)4-aryl-1-piperazinyl)propyl-benzilate. The compound is obtained by reacting a compound of formula II with a compound of formula III or its reactive derivative. The compound of formula I has actions on mammalian bladder such as strong and durable suppression of bladder rhythm contraction, suppression of agitation of bladder trigone, remission of bladder irritation state and retention of bladder micturition force, shows low toxicity, provides an extremely excellent oral absorption ratio and a high blood concentration in the case of oral administration and can maintain these effects.
