To obtain a new compound useful as a perfume-providing component such as a perfume, a cosmetic, a hair care product, a soap, a perspiration inhibitor, a detergent, a softening and finishing agent for fiber, a detergent for washing tableware, a bleaching agent, a reducing agent, an oxidizer or the like.

This new compound is 7-propyl-2H,4H-1,5-benzodioxepin-3one. The compound is obtained by, for example, starting from about 97% pure 4- propyl-1,2-benzenediol, and using a well-known reaction. A crude product of 7-propyl-2H,4H-1,5-benzodioxepin-3-one having a copper-like, phenolic and slightly fatty type smell is obtained, and the product is purified and recrystallized in heptane at -20°C to provide the objective compound having the purity higher than about 99%. The compound can expand the strong aldehyde type smell, and the smell is extremely strong and especially recalls fragrant of 2,6,10- trimethyl-9-undecenal.
