To obtain the subject new compound useful as an intermediate for enabling the synthesis of a polymer in a fewer reaction stages by using a calixresorcinolarene containing a number of hydroxyl groups at a central nucleus.
A compound of formula I [R is a (non)substituted benzyloxy; R1 is hydrogen or R; R2 to R4 are each hydrogen, a halogen or the like with the proviso that at least one of R2 to R4 is a (non)substituted benzyloxy]. The compound is obtained by reacting a compound of formula II (All is allyl; X is hydrogen, an alkyl or the like; (p) is 0-3) with a calix [4] resorcinolarene compound of formula III (Y is X; (q) is 1-3; Z is hydrogen or a hydroxyl group). The compound of formula II is obtained, for example, by starting from 3,5- dihydroxybenzoic acid. The compound of formula III is obtained by reacting resorcinol or pyrogallol with a hydroxyl group-containing aromatic aldehyde. A C-3,5-Dihydroxyphenylcalix[4]resorcinolarene is a new compound.
