Abstract:
NEW MATERIAL:β (4-Acylamidophenoxy)-α-(4-methylphenyl)-ethyl alcohol I (R is H, lower alkyl).
EXAMPLE: β-(4-Acetamidophenoxy)-α-(4-methylphenyl)-ethyl alcohol.
USE: An intermediate of the substituted phenyl urea derivative II, which is a herbicide having strong herbicidal activity to a wide range of weeds by applying to stalks and leaves, and selectivity to rice plant, soybeans, etc.
PROCESS: The compound I can be prepared by reducing 4-methyl-α-(4-nitrophenoxy)-acetophenone (novel compound) in the presence of a lower fatty acid or its anhydride. The above novel compound is prepared by reacting 4-methylphenacyl bromide with 4-nitrophenol sodium salt.
