PURPOSE: To obtain a new substituted fluorocarbon which can be used to manufacture copolymers containing fluoride useful as an ion-exchange membrane.
CONSTITUTION: These are new substituted fluorocarbones of formula I {X' is N3, SR, SO2R, PO(OR')2, P(O)Cl2, P(O)F2 (R is 1-10C alkyl; R' is CH3, C2H5, or CH2CF3; Y is Cl, F, Br, ORF (RF is 1-10C perfluoroalkyl); Z is COCl, CO2R" (R" is a 1-6C alkyl), CO2H, or a group of formula II - formula V ((m) is 0-6; (p) is 1-6; (q) is 1-5), however, when Z is COCl, CO2R", CO2H, when formula II of m=1, or formula IV of P=1, X' is N3, PO(OR')2, or POCl2; when Z is formula IV, X' is N3, SR, PO(OR')2}. The copolymer containing the unit repeated formula VI (Q is a group of formula VII or formula VIII; Y' is F or H; Y" is F, H, Cl, R', F, OR'F (R'F is a 1-4C perfloroalkyl); S is 2-1000, preferably 10-200] is obtained by copolymerizing the compound of formula I.
