To provide a new biadamantane carboxylic acid derivative capable of being easily soluble in an organic solvent and excellent in handleability, as the derivative itself, capable of being induced into a polymer having high solubility in the solvent, and useful as a raw material for a functional material excellent in electrical characteristics, heat characteristics, mechanical characteristics, optical characteristics, physical characteristics, etc.
This biadamantane carboxylic acid derivative is expressed by formula (1) [R1, R2, R3 and R4 are identical to or different from one another, and are each H or an aklyl, provided that at least one of R1, R2, R3 and R4 is an alkyl; and Ra and Rb are identical to or different from each other, and are each H or -COOZ (Z is H, a protecting group for a carboxy group, or an atom or atomic group for forming a carboxylic acid salt), provided that at least one of Ra and Rb is -COOZ, and Ra and Rb are identical to or different from each other, when Ra and Rb are each -COOZ].
