To obtain the subject new compound useful as an anti-helicobacter pylori agent, serine protease inhibitor, etc., for preventing and/or treating infection of Helicobacter pylori and allergic diseases.
This binaphthalene derivative is represented by the formula [R1 to R4 are each H or a 1-3C alkyl (preferably methyl group)], its salt, hydrate thereof or solvate thereof. The compound of the formula is produced by culturing a microorganism belonging to the genus Chaetomium and having ability to produce 1,1',8,8'-tetrahydroxy 2,2'-binaphthalene in which R1 to R4 are each H, e.g. Chaetomium brasiliense P578 (FERM P15966) in a medium containing nutriments which ordinary microorganisms can utilize, preferably in a solid medium using rice and agar medium, etc., at 27-30°C for 10-20 days and carrying out isolation and purification of the objective substance from the cultured solution and further as necessary, alkylation by conventional method.
