Title:
BINAPHTHOL DERIVATIVE AND ITS PRODUCTION
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP3252491
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:

PURPOSE: To provide a new compound useful as a raw material for catalyst for asymmetric synthesis.
CONSTITUTION: 7,7'-Dimethyl-1,1-bi-2-naphthol of formula. The compound can be produced by the oxidative coupling of 7-methyl-2'-naphthol in the presence of a cupric salt [preferably copper(II) nitrate] and an amine (e.g. phenetylamine such as α-phenetylamine) preferably in an alcohol (e.g. methanol). The reaction is carried out preferably at -20 to +80°C by using usually 1-5 equivalent of the cupric salt and 1-20 equivalent of the amine based on the 7-methyl-2- naphthol. The 7-methyl-2-naphthol used as a starting raw material can be produced e.g. from 2-methylnaphthalene.
