PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a resin for binder for magnetic coating material which has good dispersibility in fine ferromagnetic powder, is suitable for high-speed coating application as well and gives a coating film having excellent durability and wear resistance, and a magnetic recording medium having a magnetic layer which is excellent in characteristics.
SOLUTION: This binder for magnetic coating material consists of a copolymer obtd. by polymerizing a monomer mixture contg. (1) a monomer selected from among vinyl chloride, alkyl (meth)acrylate, alkoxyalkyl (meth)acrylate, styrene and alkyl styrene and (2) acetoacetoxylalkyl (meth)acrylate as a main material. The dispersibility of the copolymer (binder resin) of the magnetic recording medium to the ferromagnetic powder is good and, therefore, even if the magnetic coating material is formed to the viscosity suitable for high- speed coating application work, the smoothness of the coating film surface is good and the wear resistance thereof is excellent. Even more, the physical characteristics of the coating film are good. The magnetic recording medium has the magnetic layer excellent in durability and magnetic characteristic and is effective for use as magnetic tapes, magnetic cards, floppy disks, etc.
