Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain optically active α-cyano-3-phenoxy-4-fluorobenzyl alcohol, by treating (R,S)-α-cyano-3-phenoxy-4-fluorobenzyl alcohol with specific esterase.
CONSTITUTION: A bacterium belonging to the genus Arthrobacter, Achromobacter, etc. is cultivated to give esterase to be reacted with an organic carboxylic acid ester of (R,S)-α-cyano-3-phenoxy-4-fluorobenzyl alcohol, capable of subjecting preferentially an organic carboxylic acid ester of (S)-form alcohol to asymmetric hydrolysis. The organic carboxylic acid ester of (R,S)-form alcohol is reacted with the esterase at ≤7pH, asymmetrically hydrolyzed, to give α-cyano-3-phenoxy-4-fluorobenzyl alcohol.
