Title:
BIOMETALLIC MATERIAL
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPS5816049
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain a composite material having high compatibility with a living body and superior mechanical properties by combining ≥1 kind of metal selected from Al, Sn, Zr and Au with ≥1 kind of material selected from oxide powder, nitride powder, whiskers, boron filaments and plastics.

CONSTITUTION: The elastic modulus of each of Al, Sn, Zr and Au is several times that of a bone and is relatively close to that of bone. When the metals are used as a reinforcing material, a gap is hardly formed on the interface between the material and a bone, and the necrosis of the bone cells and the formation of a tumor due to the concentration of local stress are prevented. The metals have superior corrosion resistance in oxidizing environment, yet the mechanical properties are inferiro. To strengthen the metals they are combined with powder of an oxide such as calcium oxide, alumina or silica, nitride powder, single crystal whiskers or boron filaments for composite reinforcement.
