Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a biopsy needle used in conjunction with imaging and planning software to identify and treat lesions of the prostate in a transperineal prostate needle biopsy system and method.SOLUTION: A biopsy needle actuator device includes a biopsy needle assembly for excising a tissue specimen, and a mandrel 102 with a core bed 116 forming a projection for marking the specimen. The projection may include a marking agent for marking the specimen, and an actuator assembly used with the needle assembly includes a counter assembly, identifies a biopsy specimen during processing and tracks cumulative biopsies acquired by the actuator assembly. Three-dimensional biopsy mapping and a focal therapy system use an imaging system to generate and store three-dimensional images of the target tissue. The biopsied lesion site of the tissue specimen is recorded by the three-dimensional image and the volume of the tumor is calculated and represented in the three-dimensional image.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 3A
