Abstract:

To obtain a new compound suitable for providing a bright polymer dispersed type liquid crystal display element drivable with a low voltage.

This compound is represented by formula I [(n) is 2-5], concretely 4'-(biphenyl-4"-ylethyl)biphenyl-4-yl methacrylate. The compound is obtained by reacting, e.g. 4-bromophenylalkylcarboxylic acid represented by formula II with thionyl chloride, then passing the resultant product through a 4- bromophenylalkanoyl chloride represented by formula III and reacting a 4- hydroxy-4'-(biphenyl-4"-ylalkyl)biphenyl represented by formula IV with methacryloyl chloride in the presence of triethylamine in chloroform.
