PURPOSE: To obtain a new bismaleimide compound useful as a lamination material, sealing material, electrically insulating material, adhesive and structural material.
CONSTITUTION: This bismaleimide compound is expressed by formula I (R1 to R8 each is H or an alkyl; R9 is (CF3)C(CF3), group of formula II, formula III or a bivalent aliphatic residue; when R9 is a bivalent aliphatic residue, the total carbon number of R1 to R9 is ≥9), e.g. 4,4'-cyclohexylidene-bis[1-(4- maleimidophenoxy)-2-(1,1-dimethyl)benzene. The bismaleimide compound of formula I is produced by reacting an aromatic diamine of formula IV with maleic anhydride in an organic solvent, subjecting the obtained maleamic acid to dehydrative cyclization in a solution in the presence of an acid catalyst while removing the produced water by azeotropic distillation, distilling out the organic solvent from the system and pouring the concentrated liquid under vigorous agitation into a mixed liquid composed of water and a non-polar solvent to cause the precipitation of maleimide.
