To disclose black matrix compositions, methods for forming a black matrix and apparatus used in the formation of a color filter for a flat-panel display.

The compositions, methods and apparatus use an additive including polymerizable molecules, with the polymerizable molecules each having polar portions and nonpolar portions. The nonpolar portions are ink-phobic and migrate toward the surface of the black matrix composition upon the surface that is exposed to activation energy. The polar portions of the polymerizable molecules are ink-philic relative to the nonpolar portions. Numerous other features are disclosed.
