PURPOSE: To produce the title black plated steel sheet at a low cost by forming the plating layer of the Ni-Zn alloy or Ni-Zn-Sn alloy having a specified composi tion by hot alloying on the surface of a steel sheet, and dipping the sheet in an acidic bath consisting essentially of sulfuric acid.

CONSTITUTION: The layer of Ni or an alloy contg. Ni and one or two kinds between Zn and Sn and the layer of Zn or a Zn-Ni alloy are electroplated on the surface of a steel sheet. Alternatively, the layer of Ni or an alloy contg. Ni and one or two kinds between Zn and Sn, the layer of Sn or an Sn-Ni alloy, and the layer of Zn or a Zn-Ni alloy are electroplated on the steel sheet surface. The layers are heated at 200°C for ≥1 sec, and alloyed to form the layer of an Ni-Zn alloy contg. 10W70% Ni or further the layer of an Ni-Zn-Sn alloy. The plated steel sheet is dipped in the 2W30% sulfuric acid bath or sulfuric acid bath contg. an oxidizing agent such as a nitrate kept at 40W60°C for 2W10sec to blacken the surface.
