PURPOSE: To increase easily the scale of a boiled bed reactor, by catalytically reacting heavy oil with a hydrogen-containing gas in the presence of a hydrogenating catalyst for the heavy oil in a fluidized state in a reactor having plural boiled bed reaction cylinders.
CONSTITUTION: A boiled bed reactor containing a catalyst 12, packed in the interior of boiled bed reaction cylinders (2a)W(2d), and fluidized with heavy oil and a hydrogen-containing gas fed from the bottom of dispersion plates (3a)W (3d) upward at a controlled flow rate of the heavy oil or hydrogen-containing gas or both kept within such a range as not to make the top 13 of the fluidized catalyst 12 exceed the top of the boiled bed reaction cylinders (2a)W(2d). The resultant product oil of light oil, etc. formed by the reaction and hydrocarbon gas and hydrogen sulfide gas, ammonia, water, etc. are discharged together with the unreacted hydrogen gas from an outlet 6 to the outside of the reactor.
