Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain a composite article which, when used for producing structural panels such as trailer panels, exhibits strengths equal to those of a rather thick metal sheet by mating an adhesive-coated side of a metal foil with a specifically treated polypropylene sheet at high temp. and pressure.

CONSTITUTION: This composite article is produced by a process which comprises the step (A) of applying an adhesive comprising an ethylene/acrylic acid copolymer and at least one linear low-density polyethylene or comprising the first thermoplastic styrene/diene block copolymer to one side of a metal foil, the step (B) of treating a fiber-reinforced polypropylene sheet by coating it with the second thermoplastic styren/diene block copolymer contg. an acid or acid anhydride component or by heatlofting the sheet, and the step (C) of mating the adhesive-coated surface of the metal foil with the treated polypropylene sheet at high temp. and pressure to form a composite article.
