To provide a torque converter preventing deterioration of bonding quality.

In the torque converter having abutment parts 1g, 2g formed on an impeller shell 1 and a converter cover 2 bonded by friction stir welding, a backing member 12 damming plastic flow of material of the impeller shell 1 and the converter cover 2 during friction stir welding is arranged in an opposite side to an insertion side of a star rod 7 in a bonding part 8.
