To provide a book management method in a library management system for managing a status of a book moved for reading in a bookshelf and a reading room in a library and enabling a user to easily determine whether the book exists in the bookshelf or is being read in the reading room.

The library management system includes: books with IC tags attached thereto, an IC tag reader installed between a bookshelf and the reading room, a database for storing the reading status or the like of books which are read by the IC tag reader, and a retrieval means displaying a reading status of each book.
