PURPOSE: To attain stable page turnover scanning by adjusting the position of the book original so that a spread center position of a file margin of the book original is coincident with a scanning reference center position even when any page is spread open.
CONSTITUTION: A read center point S of a spread book original is deviated from a center point P of a spline 88 in the horizontal direction by a distance X1 by exerting a force to a front cover 90 and a rear cover 91 of a book original BO from its lower side so as to make surfaces of left and right pages of the book original BO (read face 89) flat. In this case, the thickness R1 being half the total thickness BF of the book original and a tilt TH1 of the rear cover 88 are detected by a slider and a horizontal deviation X1 between the read center point S of the spread book original and the center point P of the spline 88 is calculated and the read range of the scanning unit is always set to be a predetermined range by moving the book original BO together with the original platen by the deviation X1 of the read center point S in a direction opposite to the direction of the deviation of the read center point S of the book original.
