The composite material is mainly composed of boron carbide, silicon carbide and silicon. Provided that the peak intensity belonging to the (021) face of boron carbide measured by X-ray diffraction is defined as X, the peak intensity belonging to the (006) face of the silicon carbide is defined as Y and the peak intensity belonging to the (111) face of the silicon is defined as Z, the peak intensity ratio x of the boron carbide as the ratio (%) of the peak intensity X to the total (X+Y+Z) of each peak intensity satisfies 5<x<30.
