Abstract:
PURPOSE:To improve sealing performance, durability, and sliding characteristic by treating kapok fiber with acid or alkali, so as to provide both opposing characteristics, ''oilphilic'' and ''hydrophilic''. CONSTITUTION:The braided packing made of kapok fiber is provided with oleo- philic characteristic and hydrophilic characteristic at the same time. For example, the packing unit consists of the center core composed of the braided yarn 3 which is formed by collecting untreated kapok yarn and the outer peripheral braided yarn 4 which is formed by collecting the kapok yarn treated with aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid and is braided in square form so as to enclose the center core. The said packing unit is impregnated with mineral oil and solid lubricant. As the untreated kapok fiber which contains oil in the cellulose itself in the center core is used in case of braided packing, the packing is suitable for the usage where oil holding characteristic is important. More superior packing can be obtained, when the mixed yarn made of the reinforcing fiber and the kapok fiber treated with acid or alkali is used.
