To provide a brake device of an elevator which is applicable to an elevator having a winding drum type hoist, and suppresses size increase of a gripping device gripping a main cable.
The brake device 13 of an elevator includes a brake device body 16, and a guide device 17 guiding the brake device body 16 in the axial direction of a hoist sheave 15 in relation to the hoist sheave 15. The brake device body 16 includes a break head 22 including: the gripping device 25 gripping the main cable 7 and applying the braking force to the main cable 7; and engagement devices 26, 27 pressed by the main cable 7 displaced toward the axial direction of the hoist sheave 15. The engagement devices 26, 27 are pressed by the main cable 7 displaced toward the axial direction of the hoist sheave 15, consequently the brake device body 16 is displaced according to the displacement of the main cable 7 while being guided by the guide device 17.
