To provide a braking device which carries out braking operation in response to overspeed rotation of a rotary shaft.
The braking device comprises an input shaft 3 connected to the rotary shaft so as to rotate in association with the rotary shaft, an output shaft 4, an oil chamber 1 hermetically containing viscous fluid O, coupler means accommodated in the oil chamber which includes a first coupler member 5B connected to the input shaft and a second coupler member 4B, at least one of the first and second coupler members being composed of a spline type vane member 5, and enforcing means 6 for enforcing the first and second coupler members in the direction to be connected to one another. The spline type vane member delivers the viscous fluid in the predetermined direction according to its rotation. When the rotary shaft rotates at an overspeed, the spline type vane member is moved in the axial direction against the enforcing force of the enforcing means by the pressure of the viscous fluid excessively delivered in the predetermined direction. As a result, coupling of the first and second coupler members are released and the output shaft is braked.
