PURPOSE: To attain channel display or display of tuning state or the like at the same time by means of one character display circuit by adding the information of the presence or absence of a television signal or tuning state as the channel display on a television screen.

CONSTITUTION: A broadcast identification circuit 12 receiving each signal (video tuning signal, sound tuning signal and horizontal synchronizing signal) from a video detecting circuit 3, a sound detecting circuit 6 and a synchronism deflection circuit 8 detects the presence or absence of the television signal and the tuning state from each input signal and outputs the result to a micro-controller 33. The micro-controller 33 converts the information representing the presence or absence of the television signal and tuning state into color designating information, feeds the information to an on-screen character display circuit 11, where a video signal adding the color designation information to a character signal generated from a character generator 24 is formed. Thus, the channel display displayed on a cathode ray tube 9 is changed depending on the presence or absence of the television signal and the tuning state.
