PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a builder for a detergent comprising a polymer having a narrow mol.wt. distribution and excellent in both antigelling ability and chelating ability and a process for preparing the same, and to provide a polymer preferably employed in uses other than a builder for a detergent.
SOLUTION: The objective builder for a detergent contains as an essential component a poly(meth)acrylic acid(salt)-based polymer having a product of antigelling ability and chelating ability of at least 18,000. In the process for the preparation thereof, the wt. ratio of the total amount of monomer components, a chain transfer agent and a polymerization initiator to the total amount of an aqueous medium is in the range of 46:54-66:34, and at least 10% of the aqueous medium and 0-50% (preferably 1-50%) of the chain transfer agent is previously charged into a reactor and subjected to polymerization at a reaction temperature of 50-120°C while at least 70% of the monomer components, at least 50% (preferably 50-99%) of the chain transfer agent and at least 80% of the polymerization initiator are successively fed to the reaction system at a temperature of 50-120°C.
