PURPOSE: To efficiently obtain a polymer narrow in mol.wt. distribution and having a proper high mol.wt. by subjecting ethylenically unsaturated monomers to the bulk addition polymn. within a extruder in the presence of a catalyst consisting of an initiator of a specific metal compd. and a cocatalyst such as an anion.
CONSTITUTION: When an ethylenically unsaturated monomer (e.g.; methyl methacrylate) or a monomer mixture is subjected to the bulk addition polymn. to produce a homopolymer or a copolymer, polymn. reaction is at least partially performed in an extruder in the presence of a catalyst consisting of an initiator (A) represented by formula I [wherein, R1 is a 1-10C alkyl, 6-10C aryl etc.; Z is CN, a group represented by formula II (R2 and R3 are each H, a 1-10C alkyl, alkenyl or 6-10C aryl etc.), or a group represented by formula III (Z1 is O or N and m is 2-4), etc., and M is Si, Sn or Gel {e.g.; [(1-methoxy-2-methyl- propenyl)oxy]trimethylsilane etc.}, and a cocatalyst (B) being an anion supply source or Lewis acid (e.g.; tetramethylammonium fluoride, etc.), to obtain the objective polymer.
