To provide bundling and strapping devices and methods capable of directly receiving newspapers from a current insertion device and a conveyor and applying an appropriate pressure on a newspaper bundle to make the top of the stacked newspaper bundle substantially flat without having to reverse the direction of the stacking direction of the newspapers, by overcoming problems that the newspapers in bundle allow air to be entrapped between pages, tending to increase the volume of the newspaper bundle, and resultantly each newspaper has to reverse its direction one by one alternately to prevent the state that one edge part of the bundle becomes thicker than the other edge part, causing the paper to slip down from the bundle.

The bundling and strapping devices are so constituted that a material (specially newspaper) is compressed to remove the air entrapped in the bundle therefrom to form a bundle of a flat material. A compressor can travel in the direction to a holding member, forming the first bundle of the material in the direction vertical to the substantially flat material to compress the first bundle.
