Abstract:

To improve the cooling performance of a cabin air compressor (CAC) motor 28 in an environmental control system for an aircraft.

A cabin air compressor apparatus includes: a cabin air compressor (CAC) 12 which is a centrifugal compressor; and the CAC motor 28 connected through a CAC shaft 30. The pressure differential between a compressor inlet 16 and a ram fan inlet 21 causes a bearing cooling flow 42 for cooling a bearing 40 and a motor cooling flow 44 for cooling a stator winding wire 38 to flow across the CAC motor 28. A blower 68 comprising a plurality of blower blades 70 fixed to a CAC 62 rotor, is disposed in an exit channel 60 so as to urge the cooling flows in association with the operation of the CAC 12. Accordingly, flow rates of the cooling flows are increased, thereby improving the cooling for the CAC motor 28.
