PURPOSE: To provide a cam follower showing remarkably improved brittleness, high hardness and wear resistance, using a liq.-phase sintered alloy having a soft-nitrided layer on the surface as the material of the sliding part forming the sliding surface, and being combined with a cam shaft having a chilled cam nose and a soft-nitrided surface layer.
CONSTITUTION: The cam nose 31 of a cam shaft 3 is chilled with a chilling block during casting to form a chilled layer 32, and a soft-nitrided layer 4 is formed on the whole surface of the shaft 3. It is desirable that the amount of surface cementite of said chilled layer is 30W55% by area. The shaft 3 is combined with a cam follower 1. The sliding part 2 of the follower 1 forming the sliding surface contacting with the shaft 3 is made of a liq.-phase sintered alloy, the body of the follower 10 is made of steel or cast iron, and the sliding part 2 is soft-nitrided to form a Cr nitride layer with superior fitness, an Fe nitride layer and a nitrided and diffused layer in order from the surface. Thus, the desired cam follower 1 is obtd.
