PURPOSE: To allow a given material to be selected as a cam main body as well as to secure a cam the surface of which is excellent in wear resistance, pitting damage resistance and lubricity, at low cost by constituting the surface of the cam main body to be covered with a hardened layer made of wear resistant metallic powder.
CONSTITUTION: A cam material 1 is constituted of a cam main body 2 made of common steel, and of a hardened layer 4 covering the surface of the cam main body 2, which is made of wear resistant metallic powder of hard steel, and an axial hole 3 to which a cam shaft is inserted, is bored in the cam main body 2. When the cam material 1 made by this means is used, the cam main body 2 can be made of inexpensive common steel, cost can thereby be lowered down, and sufficient wear resistance can concurrently secured by the hardened layer 4 on the surface of the cam material. In addition, the hardened layer 4 includes fine pores which accelerate the osmotic action of oil, thereby making a lubricating action effective on the surface of the cam main body.
