Abstract:
PURPOSE:To increase anti-scuffing property by distributing mesh carbide shorter in carbide-to-carbide distance than granular carbide at the same carbide area ratio at least on the sliding surfaces of a camshaft made of cast steel of a specified composition. CONSTITUTION:A camshaft for opening and closing the intake and exhaust valves of an engine at a specified timing contains in weight 0.8% to 2.0% of carbon, 0.4% to 2.0% of silicon, 0.3% to 1.5% of manganese, 6.0% to 20.0% of chromium, 0.3% to 5.0% of molybdenum, 0.1% or less of phosphorus and the rest of iron and unavoidable impurities, and at least its sliding surfaces is formed by cast steel in which mesh carbide is distributed. Also, 0.05% to 0.3% of sulphur in weight is included and its sliding surfaces are so formed that the above mesh carbide is distributed in its martensite base layer.
