PURPOSE: To easily manufacture the camshaft having excellent strength and wear resistance and having prolonged service life without using a chill block, at the time of manufacturing a camshaft used in the combination with a roller follower, by subjecting a non heattreated alloy steel to hot forging and thereafter executing air-cooling.
CONSTITUTION: Round bar stock of a non heattreated alloy steel contg., by weight, 0.15 to 0.35% Si, 0.90 to 1.30% Mn, 0.08 to 0.15% V and 0.3 to 0.5% C is subjected to induction heating to 1200°C and is thereafter subjected to hot forging into camshaft stock having a prescribed shape. Next, the high temp. hot forged camshaft stock is subjected to atmospheric cooling or forced air cooling by a fan and the stock is mechanically worked to manufacture a camshaft. The high strength camshaft having high hardness of 25 to 40 HRC Rockwell hardness and excellent wear resistance can be manufactured by a method simpler than a conventional chilling method by using a chill block.
