To provide a device and a method improved for sensing of a capacitive position.
A capacitive movement amount encoder 140 for sensing the position of a moving body with respect to a stationary body includes: at least one stationary element 141 connected to the stationary body; and a moving element 148 connected to the moving body in the vicinity of the stationary element. Electric field transmission means 142 generates an electrostatic field which is modulated by a capacitance change appearing between both of the stationary element 141 and the moving element 148 according to relative movement of both the stationary element 141 and the moving element 148. A conductive shield 154 is electrically isolated from both of the moving body and the stationary body, and seals the moving element 148 and the stationary element 141 to protect both of the moving element 148 and the stationary element 141 from external electric interference. A processing circuit 138 senses the modulated electrostatic field and calculates position measurement amount of the moving body in response to the sensing.
