PURPOSE: To provide a novel compound useful as an antibacterial agent against gram-positive and negative bacteria, especially against gram-negative bacteria including Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula I {R1 is OH, (substituted) lower alkyl R2 is lower alkyl; Y is carboxyl (ester), R3 is group of formula II [A ring is (substituted) heterocyclic group which has 1-4 nitrogen atoms and further which may have O, S), group of formula III [B ring is (substituted) aromatic heterocyclic group which may contain O, S); R4 is lower alkyl], etc.; the wave line exhibits cis or trans isomer}. For example, (1R,5S,6S)-6-[(1R)-1-hydroxyethyl]-1- methyl-2-[(Z)-3-hydroxy-1-propen-1-yl]thiocarbapen-2-em-3-carboxylate.sodium salt. The compound of formula I is obtained from a compound of formula IV (R' is carboxyl-protecting group) through a compound of formula V, etc.
