PURPOSE: To provide a carbon-containing refractory excellent in oxidation resistance by subjecting a carbonaceous substance to precoating treatment with a coating material composed of pitch having a high softening point and specific fine inorganic powder, and then mixing the resultant carbonaceous substance with a refractory material at a prescribed weight ratio.
CONSTITUTION: A coating material is produced by mixing 100 pts.wt. pitch having a high softening point with 10-300 pts.wt. one or more fine powders (e.g. TiN or Al-Mg) selected from nitrides, carbides, borides, metals and alloys. The resultant coating material is then used to subject a carbonaceous substance (e.g. scaly graphite) to coating treatment. The carbonaceous substance subjected to the coating treatment in an amount of 3-50 pts.wt. is subsequently mixed with 97-50 pts.wt. refractory material (e.g. magnesia or spinel) to produce a carbon-containing refractory. The resultant carbon-containing refractory is preferably used as a metallurgical refractory in the coexistence of other refractory aggregates.
