To obtain a carbon fiber reinforced aluminum based composite material in which joining strength between carbon fiber and aluminum or an aluminum alloy as a base material is increased and the effect of improving the mechanical strength in the carbon fiber is sufficiently exhibited, and which has high mechanical strength.
A metallic layer 5 consisting of a plurality of metallic layers 6 and 7 is formed on the surface of carbon fiber 4. The metallic layer 6 in contact with the carbon fiber 4 is composed of a first metal capable of forming a sound solid solution with carbon. The metallic layer 7 in contact with the base material 2 comprises the first metal and a second metal capable of forming a sound solid solution with the base material, and the compositional ratio between the first metal and the second metal is transitionally changed.
