To provide a carbon fiber having excellent adhesion to a matrix resin.
The carbon fiber is obtained by applying thereto at least one amine selected from tertiary amines of the following general formula (I) and of three other types, and/or by applying thereto a salt of the at least one amine. In the formula, R1 represents a hydrocarbon group having 1-22 carbon atoms, a group including a hydrocarbon having 1-22 carbon atoms and an ether structure, a group including a hydrocarbon having 1-22 carbon atoms and an ester structure, or a group including a hydrocarbon having 1-22 carbon atoms and a hydroxy group. R2 represents an alkylene group having 3-22 carbon atoms and may include an unsaturated group. R3 represents hydrogen, a hydrocarbon group having 1-22 carbon atoms, a group including a hydrocarbon having 1-22 carbon atoms and an ether structure, a group including a hydrocarbon having 1-22 carbon atoms and an ester structure, or a group including a hydrocarbon having 1-22 carbon atoms and a hydroxy group. Alternatively, R1 and R3 are combined to form an alkylene group having 2-11 carbon atoms.
