Abstract:

To provide a carbon-based composite material which carries a large carrying amount of a protein, a metal complex or a metal, and which is excellent in stability and activity of a carrying ingredient and is useful as a catalyst or the like.

The carbon gel composite material has at least one carrying ingredient selected from the group consisting of carbon gel and the protein, the metal complex and the metal, wherein, if an X-ray diffraction peak is not found in a scanning region 2θ=0.5-10° (CuKαray), and if the pore size value of the distribution peak top exists in the range of 1 nm or more and less than 10 nm in the pore size distribution as calculated by the adsorption and desorption isotherm while the pores consist of primary particles having the average particle diameter of 2-50 nm, 60% or more of the total pore volume is included in the pore size region of d±2 nm based on the pore size value (d), and if the pore size value of the distribution peak top exists in the range of 10 nm to 50 nm, 60% or more of the total pore volume is included in the pore size region of (0.75×D)-(1.25×D) nm based on the pore size value (D).
