To provide a carbon identification method of a brush capable of quantitatively obtaining a ratio of natural graphite to artificial graphite included in the brush, and identifying a distribution state thereof.
This brush feeds power to a coil wound around a rotor of an electric motor. This carbon identification method of a brush identifies a ratio of natural graphite to artificial graphite included in the brush when the brush is formed of a material containing the natural graphite and the artificial graphite. The carbon identification method includes: a step S1 of dividing a surface of the brush into a plurality of areas, and analyzing the respective areas by Raman spectroscopic analysis; a step S2 of calculating a peak ratio of a D peak to a G peak of a Raman spectrum for every area from the analysis result by the Raman spectroscopic analysis; a step S3 of obtaining an area ratio of areas where the peak ratio exceeds a predetermined threshold value to areas other than them; and a step S4 of identifying the ratio of the natural graphite to the artificial graphite included in the brush based on the area ratio of the areas.
