PURPOSE: To obtain acetic anhydride and methyl acetate useful as industrial raw materials in high yield without using a high-quality materials for a reactor by using a nickel catalyst, reacting dimethyl ether with carbon monoxide in the presence of an iodine compound in a gaseous phase.
CONSTITUTION: Dimethyl ether is reacted with carbon monoxide in the presence of a catalyst obtained by supporting nickel on a carrier such as active carbon, etc. and an iodine compound as a reaction promotor in a gaseous phase at 100W 350°C, preferably at 200W280°C at normal pressure W350 atmospheric pressure as reaction pressure, industrially 10W50 atmospheric pressure, to give acetic anhydride and methyl acetate. Nickel chloride, nickel acetate, etc. is used as nickel supported on the carrier of the catalyst, and its amount supported is 0.1W50wt% based on the carrier. An amount of the iodine compound used is 0.005W1.0 molar ratio of iodine in the iodine compound/(iodine and dimethyl ether in the iodine compound).
